HR Trends & Priorities 2026 — The Heatmap: 50 Hours of Analysis, 5 Minutes of Yours

Share

Every year since 2006, I do the same slightly obsessive thing: track every major HR trend report as it lands and map them against one another. This year, the 10 leading houses took five months to release, and the last one came out last week.

The result is 50 hours of reading and analysis, distilled into a single heatmap. But before you get to the heatmap, there is a part I could not stop turning over in my mind once I had finished.

What the 2026 data is actually saying

This year, the HR consensus has a clear obsession. Here are the two findings that define it:

  • AI and human-machine collaboration dominate the conversation — going from 11% to 75% coverage in a single year. No other shift across the 20-theme framework comes close.
  • The people sustainability agenda — what the World Economic Forum calls Good Work: fair wages, flexibility and protection, health and wellbeing, equity and inclusion, and the ability to grow — does not make the top 10 in any of the 10 reports.
10 publishers. A single year. The human, barely in the top ten.

Your context is not the average

I do not think that is the right bet for any real workforce — and I suspect it is not for yours. Most of what the consensus agrees on will not matter to you. Your real priorities come from your context, not the average.

The top of any list is part genuine signal, part management fad — an idea that erupts on the scene, enjoys a period of prominence, and is then supplanted.*

The question worth asking before the summer: which of the trends are you reading as signal, and which as noise?

What this series covers

This is the first of four articles exploring the 2026 HR Trends & Priorities Heatmap. The three that follow go deeper:

  • The Signal (1/3) — what the data is genuinely telling us. Access it here.
  • The Noise (2/3) — why consensus is not a strategy. Access it here.
  • The Filter (3/3) — how to decide what belongs on your own agenda. Access it here.

Start with the heatmap. It takes five minutes — and it puts the whole conversation in front of you.
